Gregg Allman was an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He co-founded the Allman Brothers Band in the late 1960s. His discography includes At Filmore East (1971), Brothers and Sisters (1973), Laid Back (1973) and I’m No Angel (1987). Allman was born Gregory LeNoir Allman on December 8, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee. His parents were Willis Turner and Geraldine Robbins Allman. He had an older brother named Duane. Allman grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida where he attended Seabreeze High School. He was inspired by blues legend B.B. King to become a musician.

CAREER
Allman mastered the guitar and keyboard at a young age. He and his brother Duane formed the band ‘the Allman Joys’ in 1965. They moved to Los Angeles two years later and renamed the band ‘Hour Glass’. They released two albums for Liberty Records, Hour Glass (1967) and Power of Love (1968). The group relocated to Macon, Georgia, in 1969 and renamed to the Allman Brothers Band. The original members were Duane, Gregg, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe.

The Allman Brothers Band’s self-titled debut album was released in 1969 by Atco Records. It was led by the singles “Dreams” and “Whipping Post”. Their sophomore album, Idlewild South, was released in 1970. The Allman Brothers Band rose to prominence with the release of their live album, At Fillmore East (1971). It was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Two more Platinum albums followed, Eat a Peach (1972) and Brothers and Sisters (1973). The Allman Brothers Band released a total of 11 studio albums, 16 live albums, and 18 compilation albums. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. They were honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Allman’s debut solo album, Laid Back, was released in 1973 by Capricorn Records. It sold over 500,000 copies in the United States. He collaborated with then-wife Cher on the 1977 album, Two the Hard Way. Allman’s other albums include Playin’ Up a Storm (1977), I’m No Angel (1987), and Low Country Blues (2011). His memoir ‘My Cross to Bear’ was published in 2012. Allman was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006. He was ranked #70 on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”.
