Holiday bundles benefit United Way

HouseMart Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts stores continue their annual tradition of raising funds for United Way chapters on Oahu, Kauai, Maui and Hawaii island through the sale of their limited-edition Holiday Gift Bundles.

The Holiday Gift Bundle is $20 and contains an aloha-print cotton face mask, pair of socks and deck of playing cards in a gift box.

The gift collection was inspired by the theme of staying home, staying safe and enjoying quality time with family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All proceeds from the bundle sales will benefit local United Way chapters: Aloha United Way, Kauai United Way, Maui United Way and Hawaii Island United Way.

Holiday bundles can be purchased at any HouseMart Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts store locations, including Kahului Ben Franklin Crafts, Kihei Ace Hardware, Lahaina Gateway Ace Hardware, Lahaina Square Ace Hardware and Pukalani Ace Hardware on Maui.

They will be available in stores through Jan. 15.

UHMC seeks nurse aide applicants

University of Hawaii Maui College’s Office of Extended Learning & Workforce Development is seeking applicants for its Spring 2021 Certified Nurse Aide training cohort.

The program is fully sponsored by Hui No Ke Ola Pono in an effort to increase workforce opportunities for Native Hawaiians.

Through online lectures and in-person labs and clinicals held on campus, students will learn nurse aide and caregiving fundamentals to prepare for the state nurse aide certification examination, according to a news release.

Classes will start Jan. 26 and run for four months until May 21. The program consists of approximately 12 hours per week of daytime classes held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays. Students will also be required to complete a 100-hour internship or work experience beginning in June 2021.

Applicants must be age 18 or older, pass a criminal history check that costs $15 and submit health clearance records.

Roots School offers month of free tuition

Roots School in Haiku is offering one month of free tuition for new kindergarten students.

New families of kindergarten children who register for both the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, which runs from Jan. 4 to May 28, and for the 2021-22 school year, will receive one month of free tuition, a $758 value, according to a news release.

Roots School is currently open for full-time, in-person classes.

“We understand that distance learning can be very challenging for students and their families,” said Head of School Melita Charan. “We are offering this special as a way to help families who may be having a hard time with their kindergartener’s online learning.”

Roots School’s preschool and 1st through 5th grade classes are currently full.

Rotary Club to pick up old trees

The Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui will offer curbside Christmas tree pickup and disposal service in Paia, Haiku, Makawao, Pukalani and Kula on Jan. 2.

Pickups will be from 8 a.m. to noon; trees need to be set out on the curb before 8 a.m.

Because the trees will be processed into compost, any decorations, including tinsel, must be removed.

The cost is $10 per small tree and $20 per large tree. Proceeds benefit the club’s community service projects.

Pickups may be scheduled by calling 878-2177 by 4 p.m Jan. 1.

ProArts puts on virtual special

ProArts in Kihei is hosting an online program, “A Very Virtual Holiday Special,” where viewers just pay what they can to enjoy the holiday entertainment.

The program features special performances by Kathy Collins, Eric Gilliom, Katy Vincent, Ross McCulley, Stephie Garrett, Jerry Eiting, Marsi Smith and Dale Button, plus songs from last year’s hit production of “The Reluctant Elf,” featuring Rueben Carrion, Patty Lee Sylva, Jamie Salcedo-Viola, Theresa Supera, Erin Kowalick and Mikaela Petrilli, and directed by Ally Shore.

Online school offers keiki program

Ka Hale Hoaka, an online Hawaiian learning school based on Molokai, has announced that it will offer a Keiki Program for students ages 5 to 11.

The program teaches Hawaiian language, music, chant, hula, arts and crafts, and is designed to be implemented into the existing distance learning curriculum of elementary schools statewide, according to a news release.

The Keiki Program is taught by co-founder Maile Naehu, “Kumu Maile,” a kumu, Native Hawaiian educator, performer, artist and community organizer from Molokai. Naehu has taught Hawaiian immersion for Kamehameha Schools and is a resource teacher for the state Department of Education.

The program costs $97 and includes one year of access to video sessions with Naehu; Hawaiian stories, language and traditions; leadership values; Hawaiian music, song, dance, stories and chants.

Students who sign up for the program up until Dec. 27 will have access to two live Ha’awaina Paheona (art classes) during winter break on Dec. 28 and Jan. 4. The program is also available for a subscription rate of $12 per month.

A complimentary 30-minute session with Naehu is available for those wanting to sample the Keiki Program curriculum.
